Why get vaccinated?
  • Influenza (flu) and H1N1 (swine flu) are contagious diseases caused by viruses.
  • They can be spread by coughing, sneezing or nasal secretions.
  • Infection rates are highest among children, and it can be dangerous for people with heart or breathing conditions.
Why vaccinate every year?
  • Influenza viruses are always changing. Because of this, influenza vaccines are updated every year and an annual vaccination is recommended.
  • Protection lasts up to one year.
Are there risks?
  • Serious problems from influenza vaccine are rare.
  • The viruses in influenza vaccine have been weakened so you cannot get the flu from the vaccine.

Seasonal Flu

H1N1

What are
the symptoms?
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Chills
  • Fatigue
  • Cough
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
H1N1 symptoms are similar to seasonal flu. They include the same symptoms as seasonal flu and can sometimes also include diarrhea and vomiting.

Who should get
vaccinated?
  • All children 6 months and older, and all older adults should get vaccinated.
  • People who are moderately to severely ill or have sever allergies should ask their doctor before getting vaccinated.
  • Anyone who is at risk of complications from influenza, or more likely to require medical care such as pregnant women, those with long-term health problems, and anyone with a weakened immune system or muscle or nerve disorders.
The Centers for Disease Control recommends the following groups receive the 2009 H1N1 vaccine when it becomes available:
  • Pregnant women
  • People who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of age
  • Healthcare and emergency medical services personnel
  • Persons between the ages of 6 months and 24 years old
  • People ages 25 through 64 years old who are at higher risk for 2009 H1N1 because of chronic health disorders or compromised immune systems.
For more information visit the Centers for Disease Control.
Does the seasonal flu vaccine provide protection against the H1N1 virus?
No. The influenza vaccine for this year's seasonal flu does not provide protection against the H1N1 virus.

How does the H1N1 virus spread?
H1N1 spreads similarly to the seasonal flu, mainly from person to person, through coughing or sneezing. It can also be spread by touching your nose or mouth after touching an object or surface with the virus on it.

What can I do to protect myself from getting H1N1?

There are everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of H1N1:
  • Wash your hands often with clean running water and soap.
  • Use waterless, alcohol-based hand sanitizer gels when soap is not available.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and put the used tissue in the trash.
  • If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands.
  • After you cough or sneeze, wash your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
If you do get sick, be prepared to stay home for as long as one week. Keep a supply of these items at home:
  • Fever reducing agents such as Tylenol or Motrin.
  • Alcohol-based hand sanitizer gel.
  • Tissues.
  • Thermometers.
  • Electrolyte-rich fluids such as Gatorade or Pedialyte.
