Letters About Literature

Students across the country put pen to paper and express their experiences with all kinds of books—historical, fictional, new and old—for the Letters About Literature contest. Every year, the national winners receive Target GiftCardsSM, but each entrant gets a bigger reward: a richer understanding of how books can reach your very core.

National winners help select a school or public library to receive a Reading Promotion Grant from Target. The contest is held in partnership with The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress.

Family Reading Night

Target partners with PTO Today to create an evening of fun-filled activities at a local school. It’s a chance for families to celebrate the joys and benefits of reading. Events could include:

  • Guest readers, such as a local police officer or sports star
  • Educational and fun activities such as story chains, limerick competitions and more
  • Book swaps to give kids a chance to add a new title to their library
  • Teachers dressed up as characters or historical figures
  • Games and refreshments

Family Reading Nights are great because they work for every level of reading proficiency and establish reading as something that everyone can do together. The free planning kit helps schools by offering guidelines, an equipment and supplies list, creative ideas for the event, plus pre-designed posters and flyers for promoting the reading event.
